db repair + upgrade of SC

I've just been dealing with an interesting event where my hosting company messed up my server, rebuilt it, but left a good bit of wreckage.

Currently, the store operates, but many cp features have gone missing, eg I can edit products from the store, but cp>manage products> says I have no products. Excitement.

Q: I'm due to upgrade anyway. Should I attempt a db restoration (which will lose data that is currently there) before attempting the upgrade? Or is it better to go in the other direction? Or something else?

I should note that I am now looking into one of those tables. The information is there, it just doesn't display when the cp's action should display it.
