In all versions, there is a Show Products As field in the Category Viewing > Category Page fieldseton your category records. That field currently has two choices for displaying products on a category page:

Detail
As of version 3.4.0, you will have some new choices:
Thumbnails
Detail
Table
Table - Multiple Add to Cart
When you choose Table, products will appear one per row in a table with an Add to Cart button for each product:
In the above image, I included 3 products to save some room here.
If you set Show Products As to Table - Multiple Add to Cart, the add to cart buttons for each product disappear and a single Add Items to Cart button appears at the bottom of the page:
This will allow customers to choose options for more than one product at a time, and add all of them to the cart in one shot.
If an error occurs for any product the customer tries to add to the cart, no items are added. They are presented with a generic message at the top of the page, and more specific errors above each product that had a problem:
When the operation is successful, they get feedback about all the items that were added to the cart:
There is also still the option of keeping them on the page they were on if you prefer to.
A few more details:
1. The plan is to make the Table - Multiple Add to Cart view work with the QuickTotal module, so the customer will get a total per item AND for the entire page at the bottom, above the Add Items to Cart button.
2. I plan on adding a new Thumbnails - with add to cart display option to more easily show thumbnails with add to cart buttons below each one without having to alter your templates to do so.
3. Along with these changes will come a storewide display setting, which can be overridden at the category level.
4. We will be adding an option that will allow customers to change the way they see products. If you have it turned on, the customer will be able to control whether they are viewing thumbnails, detail view, table view, etc... The field for this will be to the right of the sort field at the top of the category page.
