Free shipping applied to single item only

I have read all the threads and info regarding free shipping. I see that you can set it based upon weight, cost and all the other options.

The problem I am encountering, is that I have the free shipping setup and it works great on that particular item. If I place only that item in the cart, it is free Ground shipping. If I add another item without the "free ship" item, the shipping is accurate. However, when I add both the "free ship" item as well as the other item, the shipping total includes both items.

The "free ship" item is setup as:
Ship as a separate pkg
Weight: 0.100 lb

And the Shipping Rule:
Field: Weight total is equal to 0.1

How do we get it to keep that single item as free shipping? and bill for shipping on any other items?

Your best bet is to set the free shipping item to a weight of zero so it doesn't affect the weight of the order.

Also, just to make sure I understand this correctly. By setting the item to ship separately with a weight of 0, allows it to use the free shipping setup without deleting the actual weight. I see it working this way. So technically, in order to make an item free shipping now, I simply set ship separately and make it 0 pounds, and then to turn it off, I deselect "ship separately". This all seems to work that way, and I just want to make sure I understand correctly.

Now is there a way to automate when it is on and off like we can do with sale pricing?
