View Full Version : Handling Charge and other shipping questions?

So now that I've had a chance to get going with SquirrelCart and start setting things up I had a couple questions regarding the shipping...

Is it possible to add a handling fee that could be defined either as a flat fee for the entire store or per product? The option to seamlessly show this as part of the shipping rates would be ideal.

I searched the forum for info about this and found that it looks like it was on a todo list for a future version back in 2002 ( http://www.ldev.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22&highlight=handling+charge ) so I'm hoping that by now its made it into the current release.

Heres a few examples which would make use of this:

Example 1: I'd like to charge a handling fee for all my products (store-wide) that gets integrated into the real time shipping rates that the customer sees. So when they checkout they don't see a seperate handling fee and instead it's been added in to the shipping rates that they choose from.

Example 2: I have some products that require me to kit items together and it takes more work to package. I'd like to define a handling fee here on a per product or per category basis.

Example 3: I have to fill out customs declaration forms and jump through a bunch of other hoops to send international packages and would like to add a handling charge based on the country the package ships to (or maybe just a rule to add a handling fee if the shipping destination is a country other then the warehouse country)

Is it possible to add insurance costs to real time shipping rates? If this is not possible via the actual courier api's then can we define it ourselves? It would be nice to have this as a selectable option for the customer as well as have the ability to force it's use (meaning it would just get tacked on to the shipping rates w/out the customers input/knowledge)

Is it possible to display all rates from different couriers on the same page rather then first having to select the courier. From a customer (end-user) perspective it would make alot more sense for them to see all the shipping options and costs on one page rather then having to select the courier first and then if you want to see the other couriers rates/options having to click back and selecting the other courier, etc.. It may seem like a small thing but sometimes it can mean the difference between a customer buying from your store or going somewhere else.

Thanks in advance!

These are all pretty important things for me and I may not be able to use squirrelcart as my shopping cart unfortunately if I can't either make them work or come up with workarounds.

Hi Oteil,

1. There is no support for handling. We will be adding that in the future, and do not have an ETA for it.

2. Again, we don't support this. We may add support for obtaining insurance via RTR. When we add handling, you will be able to call it whatever you like, so you'd be able to add it manually.

3. The only instance in which you have to pick the courier first is when you have UPS enabled in conjunction with any other courier(s). This is a requirement imposed on us by UPS. They do not approve of showing their rates on the same pages as other couriers. They consider it "rate shopping" and would not allow us to set it up that way.
