Sub category display

I was wondering if there's a way to display certain subcategories in columns instead of rows. On some of my category pages, there are 20-30 subcats and it looks tacky. What I was wanting to do was split these subcats into columns as to make everything look a little neater. I know how to change all the subcats into columns but was wondering if some kind of variable could be used to make it only apply to certain subcats.
