Shipping calc step coming up blank

hi there, i am having a few problems with the shipping calculations page
it looks pretty common, so i checked everything i could find here in the forum and am still stumped

if i open a fresh browser and try to purchase an item, it dumps me to a blank page instead of calculating shipping properly
if i then click back, it will tell me i have an empty shopping cart, but after that i can start adding items and get a checkout to work fine

i have 2 types of products that i was working with, 1 needing shipping fees and 1 that has free shipping
i added 2 rules and set them both to priority of 2:
when weight total is equal to 0, shipping = 0
weight total is greater or equal to 1, shipping costs 15%

then i set my free shipping items to a weight of zero and the rest to 1 or higher
and all items are set to "enabled services" for the shipping method
so if i have a mixed order, it gets the 15% added to the total, which isnt great, but it will work

i noticed if i had an IE privacy setting higher than med, that it would give me a blank page at the shipping calc step
so i cut the extra rules and just have the default shipping method in place and i am still getting the same blank page problem no matter what setting

please take a look and let me know if you have any ideas

ok, i figured it out - i had to add the www. to my domain in the ssl url variable in config.php
